What is Bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery is surgery done in morbidly obese patients for weight loss. Obesity is measured in terms of BMI (Body mass index – Wt/Ht2). Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for achieving sustained long-term weight loss in morbidly obese patients(BMI > 35). It decreases hunger and causes weight loss. Also gut hormones play a significant role in achieving weight loss.

Morbidly obesity patients.
Obesity with associated diseases like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, arthritis, obstructive sleep apnoea, raised cholesterol, etc.

What is Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy removes grehlin secreting part of stomach on the greater curvature reducing the size of stomach, increasing satiety and reducing excess hunger and craving for food. It is used as a first stage procedure in super obese patients.

What is gastric bypass surgery?
Large portion of stomach is bypassed and joined to small intestine. The excluded part of stomach secretes acid into the duodenum to carry its routine functions. There is a substantial deficiency of vitamins and essential nutrients which need to be supplemented daily to prevent their deficiency, This procedure gives substantial and sustained long term weight loss.

What is post operative management?
You are put on liquid diet for first 2 weeks, then on pureed,soft paste like diet for nest 2 weeks, and then on solid food. You are encouraged to walk on the day of surgery, and then long walks 10 days later. You are advised iron, multivitamin and calcium supplements.
