What is OGD Scopy?

OGD Scopy is oesophago-gastro deuodenoscopy. The term endoscopy refers to a special technique for looking inside part of Body. The Swallowing tube (oesophagus) leads to the stomach which is connected to duodenum, the beginning of small intestine. The oesophagus carries food from the mouth for digestion in stomach and duodenum.

It is performed by a Endoscopist, a well trained subspecialist.

A endoscope is a long thin flexible tube with tiny video camera and light on the end. By adjusting controls of the scope, The Endoscopist can safely guide the instrument to examine the upper digestive track. The high quality picture from the endoscope is show on a t. v monitor. If gives clear and detail view.
Who should under go OGD Scopy?

OGD Scopy is helpful in evaluation and diagnosis of various problem including difficult or painful swallowing, pain the stomach or abdomen, bleeding, ulcers, tumours.

How Do I Prepare for the Procedure?

First of all give a complete list of all the medicine you are taking as well as any allergies you have to drugs and other substance. Regardless of the reason for OGD Scopy, there are important steps you can take to prepare and participate in the Procedure. Let your doctor know if you have heart, Lung or other medical conditions that may need special attention before during and after OGD Scopy.

One very important step in preparing for OGD Scopy is that you should not eat or drink within 6 hrs of your procedure. Food in stomach blocks the view through endoscope and it could cause vomiting.

You will be given the instructions in advance that will outline what you should and should not do in preparation.

It can be done as in patient or outpatient basis depending upon the indication and procedure. You will be asked to sign a consent form for the procedure. If there is anything you do not understand, please ask for more information. Get a family member or friend to accompany you for the procedure.

What can you expect during the OGD Scopy?

During the procedure, everything will be done to ensure your comfort. The procedure can be performed either under local anesthesia or sedative which will make you relax and drowsy, thus preventing you from remembering much of experience. Your blood pressure, pulse and oxygen level in your blood will be carefully monitored during the scopy.

You will have your throat sprayed and asked to gargle with local anesthetic, to help you keep comfortable. A Supportive mouth piece will be placed to help you to keep your mouth open during the endoscopy.

As the endoscope is slowly and carefully inserted air is introduced through it to help doctor see better. During the procedure will feel no pain and will not interfere with your breathing.

Your doctor will use endoscope to look closely for any problem. In some cases it may be necessary to take sample of a tissue for Biopsy. This too is a painless procedure.

What can you expect after the OGD Scopy?

After OGD Scopy you will be shifted to recovery room if you are sedated. In case you are not sedated you comfortably can walk out of endoscopy suit. The decision is made whether you will be admitted or discharged depending upon the OGD Scopy findings and procedure performs. Doctor will instruct regarding how soon you can eat and drink, plus the other guideline for you’re resuming your normal activity. Have a family member or friend to take you home. Occasionally minor problems such as mild sore throat, bloating, cramping may persist. These symptoms should disappear in 24 hrs or less.

What are post OGD Scopy orders to be followed?

Fasting following OGD Scopy will be determined based upon the findings and the procedures performed. In most patients oral liquids can be started ½ hr of the procedure and later full diet. Treatment for you will be explained by the doctor.

Fungal infection of the food pipe
What is H-Pylori Test?

If the Endoscopist suspects H-Pylori infection a biopsy may be taken fro rapid urease test. You will need to observe for color change to red at 24 hrs.
